The two largest teams in La Liga, Real Madrid and Barcelona, have fought out some incredible matches throughout the years, making their matches the highlights of the Spanish football calendar.
The competition still features some of the biggest stars in international football and frequently finds the two clubs battling for the highest rewards, even if it no longer features the legendary Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo showdown.
These clubs faced off five times during the 2022–2023 season. In the end, Barcelona triumphed over their opponents and won the league title, but Madrid exacted revenge by winning the two-leg Copa del Rey quarterfinal match.
In 255 competitive games between the two sides, Real Madrid has won 104, Barcelona 100, and the teams have shared the wins 52 times. The all-time leading striker in El Clasico history, Messi, a former Barcelona player, is second only to Sergio Busquets in terms of appearances (48) in this matchup.

El Clasico record against each other
Here, we examine every document of this historic match between the two Spanish titans.
Xavi and Carlo Ancelotti square off
After returning to Barcelona in 2021, Xavi faces Ancelotti in the dugout as the latter makes his own La Liga comeback in the same year.
As the center of Barcelona’s midfield versus AC Milan in his early career, Xavi faced Ancelotti teams three times. After Ancelotti moved on to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, they reconnected.
During Ancelotti’s first stint at Madrid, which ran from 2013 to 2015, Xavi lost just one of their four La Liga games with the Italian, however he did lose the 2014 Copa del Rey final.
When they met as rival coaches for the first time in 2021/22, it ended with one La Liga victory apiece, but Ancelotti won the championship. The previous season, Madrid defeated Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana final; but, in the 2023 edition, Xavi reversed the result.
Barca and Real Madrid split their league games last season, with the Catalans taking home victories in the Supercopa final and the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal before Madrid easily won the second game 4-0.
Jude Bellingham scored two more goals to help Madrid come back from a goal down to win 2-1 in Catalonia in their first encounter in 2023–2024. In the second, Real Madrid defeated Aramco 4-1 to win the Supercopa in Saudi Arabia thanks to a first-half hat-trick by Vinicius Jr.
