In order to prevent a vote to hold President Biden in contempt, House Republicans claim they are in talks with Hunter Biden’s attorneys about setting up his son to appear before a Congressional committee.

Hunter Biden’s legal team is reportedly in talks to testify, according to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan. This comes one week after Republicans started a campaign to find the president’s son in contempt.

After departing a House Republican conference meeting on Wednesday morning, the Ohio Republican made the comments. Jordan told NPR that so far, their conversations with Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, have gone smoothly.

Jordan announced, “Hunter Biden is coming in.” “Our counsel has had positive contacts with Mr. Lowell; nevertheless, we do not yet have a date.”

Jordan told NPR that Hunter Biden “won’t be that early” in response to a question about whether he would arrive as early as this week. This suggests that a deposition date might be scheduled for next week or later.

A resolution to hold Hunter Biden in contempt was approved by the Republican-led House Judiciary and Oversight committees at their joint hearings last week. This move sent the proposal to the whole House floor for a vote. Hunter Biden unexpectedly showed up at the Oversight meeting and offered to speak in public. His legal team then released a statement.

In a letter dated January 12, Lowell wrote to Jordan and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, “Instead of accepting Mr. Biden’s offer to voluntarily sit for a public hearing, you are now seeking to have the full House find him in contempt based on subpoenas for a deposition that you issued on November 8 and 9, 2023,” which are now deemed legally invalid.

Despite Hunter Biden’s repeated offers to testify in public, House Republicans have declined, claiming that the hearing must be taken in private. House Republican Whip Tom Emmer described Hunter Biden’s unexpected visit on Wednesday as a “press stunt.”

Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota, told reporters, “Reality seems to have set in after his publicity stunt before the Oversight Committee went flat.” “After eluding two legally issued subpoenas, Hunter Biden’s lawyer informed Chairmen Comer and Jordan at the end of the week that he was prepared to concede defeat.”

Republicans have paused a full House floor vote to hold Hunter Biden in contempt as all sides continue to negotiate. Emmer issued a warning, saying Republicans will try again to find Hunter Biden in contempt if the delays go on.

Emmer declared, “No one is above the law, not even the president’s son.”
