One of the most well-known sports commentators in history is not yet done, despite widespread rumours to the contrary.

Jim Nantz broadcast his final NCAA basketball game. The game was a championship matchup between the Connecticut Huskies and the San Diego State Aztecs, which the Huskies won handily, 76-59.

He has two daughters with his current wife, Courtney, and had previously stated that he would be taking a leave of absence from collegiate coverage in order to spend more time with his family.

Regarding his time spent refereeing NCAA football, Nantz stated:

“This has played a significant role in my life. Being aware that you won’t have to experience something like this again is never easy. Though not depressing, I’m feeling nostalgic right now. It’s thanks and appreciation.”

Before bidding them farewell, Nantz shared some insight.

The 63-year-old Nantz stated, “One thing I learnt from all of this is everybody has a dream.” “And each person has a tale to share. Simply look for that tale. Show kindness.”

Legendary broadcast partner Bill Raftery stated, “Let me tell you, you told it better than most.”

“It’s a celebration of folks I had the wonderful opportunity of working with and the people I got to know on the way to the Final Four all these years,” he said, pausing to consider the many friendships he had built during his tenure. The NCAA committee members, the coaches, and the athletes. The world of college basketball is vast, and I have had a little role in providing commentary and recording some of its most significant events.”

But Nantz was careful to dispel any misconceptions that he was giving up the booth entirely: “I’m not retiring. For the next twelve or so years, I will still cover golf, the NFL, and the Super Bowl for around 40 weeks a year.”

In 2023, Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will still be calling games. In addition, he will be calling the Masters golf major this week.

Ian Eagle will take Nantz’s spot on CBS starting with the upcoming college season. Eagle calls NBA games for YES and TNT in addition to being the network’s second-best NFL analyst.

Jim Nantz, is he retiring?

Nantz will be on the call for the 2023 Masters, starting on Thursday, so he won’t be travelling far. In addition to his golf responsibilities, he is still under contract with CBS and will continue to work with Tony Romo as the lead play-by-play announcer for the NFL.

For the last time, Nantz presented the trophy after the game. Connecticut coach Dan Hurley told him that Hurley would not weep, despite the interviewer’s best efforts.

The creators of the “One Shining Moment” tournament summary film handed Jim Nantz a subliminal wink with a view of the commentator from the floor of NRG Stadium, taken from beneath his seat.

For what duration has Jim Nantz been the NFL game caller?

In 1985, Jim Nantz started working for CBS as a PGA on-course reporter and collegiate sports studio anchor. In 1988, he secured his first football-related job as a pundit for Westwood One, which was then a part of CBS’s radio division.

He progressed through the years and in 1998 was named host of The NFL Today. He became the network as its primary play-by-play commentator after five seasons, and he has since called six Super Bowls: the first two with Tony Romo and the first four with Phil Simms. The first Super Bowl victories for Peyton Manning (XLI) and Drew Brees (XLIV), the blackout in XLVII, and Tom Brady’s final Super Bowl victory as a Patriot in LIII and his first outside of New England in LV are among the memorable highlights he has covered.

In addition to covering the NFL and NCAA, Nantz has been a CBS golf analyst since 1986, when he first joined the company. Trevor Immelman, the 2008 Masters champion, will make his major-winning debut this year, taking Nick Faldo’s place.
