In the limited series “Griselda” on Netflix, Sofía Vergara plays drug lord Griselda Blanco.

Netflix is set to release a dramatized miniseries on Griselda Blanco, the Colombian drug boss, but not before criticism over Sofía Vergara’s portrayal of the merciless murderer.

The overall picture: Blanco’s surviving son is suing the six-part series “Griselda,” and the public is criticizing the casting of a much slimmer individual in the character of Blanco, often known as “The Godmother,” or “la madrina.” The show is set to premiere on Thursday.

Details: “Griselda” chronicles Blanco’s ascent and decline throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s male-dominated drug trade.

  • It chronicles Blanco’s rise to prominence in Miami as she perfects the art of smuggling cocaine through women’s bras and establishes an empire with the assistance of other immigrant women.
  • Blanco manages the murders of numerous individuals, possibly hundreds;
  • She remains evasive of federal authorities despite her arrest in 1985 and her nearly two-decade sentence for cocaine trafficking. In 2012, she was killed in Colombia.

What they’re saying: William Nericcio, author of “Talking #Browntv: Latinas and Latinos on the Screen,” tells Axios that it’s not surprising that the series would cast Vergara as Blanco and alter her instead of casting somebody unknown who looked like Blanco.

Sofia Vergara attracts attention, and Hollywood isn’t exactly renowned for its historical accuracy. “This isn’t show ethnography; this is show business.”

The actor Aurora Cossio, who is Italian and from Colombia and portrays Estela, one of Blanco’s assistants, tells Axios Since the show aimed to cast a cast that was nearly all Latina, “Griselda” was an enjoyable project to work on. * “I simply felt like I was in the right moment with the right people in the right project.”

  • Vergara, the executive producer of the series, stated to El Hormiguero, a Spanish television program, that her motivation for taking on the Blanco project came from the dearth of chances available to Latino performers.

The allure: Vergara has stated in interviews that she was drawn to the role of Blanco because to her multifaceted persona as an anti-hero, businesswoman, mother, and ruthless assassin during the cocaine disputes.

  • “I was growing up then. That business is known to me. My brother worked with that company. She stated on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that “he was assassinated in the 1990s.”
  • Vergara was transformed into Blanco by makeup experts using prosthetic noses, various wings, artificial teeth, and eyebrow coverings. Vergara said that in order to cover up her “curves,” she must wear uncomfortable bras.

Corleone Michael The surviving son of the late drug lord, Blanco, is suing Netflix and Vergara to prevent the publication of “Griselda,” claiming that the show’s writers utilized his “private artistic literary work” without his consent or acknowledgment.
