Sofia Vergara with Will Ferrell See the trailer for Despicable Me 4 with Steve Carell as Gru

Gru, the well-known character from Steve Carell’s Despicable Me, has a new relative.

The trailer for Despicable Me 4, the newest installment in the venerable animated comedy series featuring Minions and Despicable Me, has been published by Illumination and Universal Pictures. Arriving almost seven years after the release of Despicable Me 3, the new movie follows Gru and his spouse Lucy (Kristen Wiig) as they raise Gru Jr. and maintain their bond with their adopted kids Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Polan).

Everything is going well in Gru’s household, aside from the usual mayhem caused by Minion mayhem, with the exception that Gru Jr. doesn’t seem to like his father. That is, until Steve Coogan’s character, Silas Ramsbottom, shows up and tells them that a new supervillain named Maxime Le Mal (played by Will Ferrell) has escaped from prison and is threatening to exact revenge on Gru.

The family embarks on an expedition to carry off a significant theft while fleeing to a safe place.

Despicable Me 4 follows Gru as his family “welcomes a new addition to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is keen on torturing his dad,” according to an official description for the film.

“The family is forced to go on the run as Gru meets a new foe in Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale lover Valentina (Sofia Vergara),” the description states.

The voice cast of Despicable Me 4 has expanded to include Joey King, Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman from Saturday Night Live, and Ferrell and Vergara.

The script for Despicable Me 4 was co-written by Mike White, the inventor of White Lotus, and Ken Daurio, the author of all four of the series’ films.

The new release occurs about two years after Minions: Rise of Gru, a spinoff of the main Despicable Me franchise, became the sixth most earning film of 2022 with $369 million at the US box office. Reports at the time stated that during its Independence Day opening weekend, the film broke box office records.

Despicable Me 4 is in theaters on 3^rd July, 2024.
