Surprisingly, information on a second aborted Call of Duty game has surfaced more than ten years later. The fact that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games were made by the same people that worked on this game’s development behind the scenes, however, is what makes it intriguing. This abandoned project was called Call of Duty: Future Warfare, or CoD NX1, and it’s not the first Call of Duty game that was never released.
Why Was the NX1 Call of Duty Announced?
Activision purchased the California-based Neversoft firm in 1999. The Spider-Man, Guitar Hero, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video games among the studio’s most well-known productions from the past. However, following the release of Medal of Honor 2009, several employees of Infinity Ward left, and Neversoft was given the responsibility of developing a whole Call of Duty game.
Sounds grandiose, and the game was set to surpass some enormous benchmarks as the first Call of Duty with a futuristic theme—well ahead of Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare. But the game was supposed to be out in 2013, and the Neversoft team prioritized the release of Modern Warfare 3 before that. Sadly, Call of Duty: Future Warfare plans were abandoned in lieu of Call of Duty: Ghosts following Treyarch’s release of Black Ops 2.
In actuality, Call of Duty: Ghosts borrows a lot of its concepts, titles, and designs from CoD NX1. Ghosts was co-developed by Neversoft, therefore their influence may be seen in the design of the game. However, is this the first time that news of a postponed Call of Duty game has surfaced?
Not Only Call of Duty, Which Neversoft Cancelled, Is Listed There
Rewinding to the PS3 and PS2 eras reveals information on some incredible Call of Duty concepts. Have you ever considered playing as one of Julius Caesar’s elite armies in a Call of Duty game, for example? Call of Duty: Roman Wars was an effort to realize this concept by the creators at Vicarious Visions, who let players use spears, bows, and arrows, as well as ride elephants!
There’s more: the first strategic Call of Duty game released prior to 2010 is called “Tactics.” The list continues with aborted Call of Duty games with a Vietnam theme and third-person only options. With this information, there are no strange theories as to why Activision abandoned the Future Warfare NX1 project. In the Call of Duty series, several prototypes and concepts have been shelved, including most likely Ghosts and an Advanced Warfare sequel.
Will a CoD: Future Warfare game ever be released soon? In a nutshell, no. Since 2014, the Neversoft crew has merged with Infinity Ward, and Ghosts and other futuristic Call of Duty games already utilize concepts from that game. Even the term “Operation Deadbolt,” which was one of the last missions of COD NX1, is being utilized in MW3 2023 Zombies! Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that Future Warfare is effectively extinct.
