The final Sega home system to be released was the Dreamcast. It was a huge hit, and a lot of the beloved games we play now sprang from that troubled system. Sadly, it couldn’t keep up with the times, so now we can only commemorate its North American birthday on September 9th each year. Collectors are still looking for games for the platform even though it never made it into the present day. Dreamcast collectors have a strange affinity for Capcom games and sequels.
10. Gunbird 2 – $100 (2000)
For a time now, Shmup has truly had the Dreamcast under control. Although it wasn’t the best game in the category, Gunbird 2 was an improvement over the Sega Saturn version of the first one. Digital editions for the PC and even the Switch have been available since its debut. Regretfully, the Dreamcast version of the game is the only physical version available because they are all digital. Additionally, it indicates that a price increase occurred soon after the digital distribution, encouraging consumers to add the item to their collections. If the history presented above isn’t enough to persuade you, perhaps the addition of Morrigan from Darkstalkers will.
9. Tech Romancer, $110 in 2000
Tech Romancer is a fighting game based on the well-known mecha genre that was first released as an arcade game in Japan. Every robot has an own theme song, set of moves, and backstory that contributes to the overall concept. In the Dreamcast version of the game, the Tech Romancer animation is also unlockable. Since it was first launched, this game has been extremely sought-after because it is the only one in the series.
8. 1999’s Ready 2 Rumble Boxing ($160)
In the past, sports games were far more absurd and unrealistic. Punch-Out and Ready 2 Rumble were two 3D fighting games that were comparable. they has a bunch of vibrant characters with correspondingly vibrant move sets. As part of their Greatest Hits tribute to Dreamcast games, the latter version of the game had an orange spine on the jewel box that said Sega All Stars. Fans who want to finish their collections of the game are drawn to both the All Stars and the White Cover versions.
7. $190 – Bangai-0 (1999)
Bangai-0 was a game that people wanted to add to their collections from the start. When it was first published on the Nintendo 64, it was only available in Japan in a restricted quantity of 10,000 copies. Because of its widespread appeal, it was released globally on the Dreamcast, to the delight of both fans and journalists. Despite the game’s rerelease on contemporary platforms, Dreamcast versions continue to fetch prices as high as $300 on eBay. Since the commencement of the new collector boom in 2020, the price has remained the same.
6. D2 (2000) – $200
Some horror fans believe that D2 is the greatest Dreamcast horror game. In the Canadian wilderness, you take control of Lara Parton and help her live by fending off the hideous animals that inhabit the region. While North America only got the basic version, Japan issued three separate limited editions. Its cult appeal has made it a mainstay in Dreamcast collections, much like those of titles like Parasite Eve or Clocktower. Following the 2020 collector boom, D2 had a substantial price increase, but it hasn’t changed since.
5. 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2: $200
You can almost count on being asked if you’ve played Sonic Adventure 2 if you bring up your Dreamcast. This game can still be hard to buy at a fair price, despite its popularity and large print run upon debut. In all likelihood, those who own the game in their collection have owned it since it was originally published. Fewer individuals feel compelled to part with their copies due to the associated nostalgia. Its release towards the conclusion of the console’s existence, just a year later, contributes to its scarcity.
4. EGG (1999): Elemental Gimmick Gear; $215
Birthday is the creator of the exquisitely hand-drawn game EGG: Elemental Gimmick Gear. It didn’t sell well when it was originally introduced since the game’s name and cover didn’t draw in many players. Collectors are aware, though, that if a game doesn’t sell well, there’s a significant possibility it may become uncommon later on. There are other gaming aspects that you could find enjoyable, such as 3D rail racing and puzzle-solving.
3. 2000’s Marvel vs. Capcom 2 – $220
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 revolutionised the fighting game landscape and is likely one of the most popular fighting games outside of the Street Fighter series. In tag team-style battles, many characters from the Marvel and Capcom franchises square off against one another. Being the final game in the Marvel vs. Capcom series for almost ten years made it extremely rare among collectors. Even with the release of the third game in 2011, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is still regarded as being significantly better.
2. 2000’s Power Stone 2 ($240)
Power Stone 2, which was first released as an arcade game as well, gained popularity among friends fast. There is support for four players, and each player may select from a variety of characters and skill sets. The second version became an instant collectible when just one remake was produced for the PSP. With minimal variation in price following the 2020 collector boom, it has maintained a rather high price for a number of years.
1. Arcadia’s Skies (2000) – $250
JRPGs are taken a little too literally in Skies of Arcadia. The game’s main gameplay mechanic is turn-based aerial combat, as the name would imply. You may use your airship to navigate to the floating islands that make up the game’s playable locations. After being rereleased on the Gamecube, it didn’t really garner much of a fan following or sell as well as the producers had planned. But the rise in video game collecting in 2020 drove up the price, which remained at an all-time high. According to our investigation, we have even seen the game go for over $500 on eBay.
