The most popular surgery for an enlarged prostate uses a camera, which is occasionally used to find bladder or urethral cancer.

Following surgery for an enlarged prostate, Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that King Charles III had been diagnosed with cancer. The hospital did not specify the type of cancer or the severity of the ailment.

“An additional matter of worry was identified during The King’s most recent medical operation for benign prostatic enlargement. A kind of cancer has been detected after more medical testing, the palace announced in a statement.

Charles does not have prostate cancer, according to the palace, however it is unknown what kind of cancer was found.

An enlarged prostate is very frequent in elderly men and is not associated with cancer: It affects over 80% of males over 70, according to Yale Medicine. In November, Charles celebrated his 75th birthday.

Symptoms of the illness can include trouble peeing, lack of bladder control, and numerous nighttime urination awakenings. In these situations, medical professionals frequently advise transurethral resections, which remove excess prostate tissue.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation’s senior medical officer, Dr. William Oh, explained, “They go in and they scrape some tissue so that you can urinate easier. The difficulty with the prostate is that it sits directly at the base of the bladder and it might hinder urination.”

A scope, or tube with a camera at the end, is inserted via the urethra as part of a transurethral resection procedure. Physicians may then see the prostate and determine which part of it has to be removed.

Professor of urology and oncology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Dr. Christian Pavlovich stated that the scope might find cancer in adjacent regions like the bladder or urethra.

He stated, “You may occasionally have a bladder tumour or anything else that isn’t symptomatic, and you’ll simply see it when you get in there.”

Additionally, bloody urine might be picked up via a scope, “which could signal anything bleeding from the kidney,” according to Fox Chase Cancer Centre urologic oncology professor Dr. Justin Friedlander. He stated that the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder, known as the ureter, may have cancer in it, which would indicate kidney cancer.

In other cases, when pathologists examine prostate tissue taken following surgery, they may discover malignant tissue that originated in other regions of the body.

malignancies that are not actually related to prosthetics, like as lymphomas (blood tumours) or urothelial malignancies (cancer of the lining of the bladder and urethra), can affect the prostate, according to Pavlovich.

That would indicate that the cancer had progressed and maybe migrated to other organs, according to Friedlander.

According to Dr. Julio Pow-Sang, head of the genitourinary oncology programme at the Moffitt Cancer Centre in Tampa, Florida, the discovery of malignant tissue after a prostate enlargement surgery is often uncommon.

“90 or 95% of the time it’s innocuous, but you may have a surprise,” he stated.

Although Buckingham Palace has previously referred to Charles’ enlarged prostate surgery as “corrective,” it did not disclose on Monday what sort of treatment Charles had.

Occasionally, physicians will use a laser or intense heat to burn away extra prostate tissue rather than do a transurethral resection, however these techniques are less frequent.

Charles landed in London on Monday to start his routine outpatient cancer treatments, according to Buckingham Palace.

The palace declared, “His Majesty is looking forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible and is thankful to his medical staff for their skilled care and timely action.”
