The lead vocalist for Can, Damo Suzuki, was a Japanese singer who passed away at the age of 74.

Today (February 10), the band revealed Suzuki’s loss in a social media statement without disclosing the cause of death. He had earlier stated that he had been given a 10% chance of surviving his ten years of colon cancer treatment.

Can released a statement saying, “It is with great regret that we have to announce the demise of our amazing buddy Damo Suzuki, yesterday, Friday, February 9, 2024.” His unending creative energy has impacted many people worldwide, not just via Can but also through his Network Tour, which traverses every continent.

“We shall always miss Damo’s cheeky smile and caring spirit. He’s going to be in on an amazing jam with Michael [Karoli], Jaki [Liebezeit], and Holger [Czukay].

Born in January 1950 in Kobe, Japan, Kenji Suzuki traveled and performed as a busker around Europe during his late teenage years. In 1970, when performing on the street in Munich, he happened to meet Czukay and Liebezeit while the two members of Can were sitting outside a café.

At that moment, after appearing on Can’s debut album, Monster Movie, singer Malcolm Mooney had just quit the band, so Czukay and Liebezeit extended an invitation to Suzuki to join them. He accepted their invitation and joined them on stage that evening.

Up until 1973, Suzuki was a member of Can, contributing to some of their most cherished projects, including Future Days, Ege Bamyasi, and Tago Mago. He frequently improvised his lyrics and sang them in no particular language both live and on record.

Suzuki stepped away from writing and playing music for ten years after leaving the band in 1973. At this time, he married and joined the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

In 1983, after quitting the religion, he started performing again and started Damo Suzuki’s Network, which had him playing live improvisational performances with local musicians wherever he was playing.

Over the next years, Suzuki kept on touring and releasing music; from the start of the 2010s, in particular, a number of joint albums have emerged. Arkaoda, his most recent full-length album, was released in 2022 and was produced in collaboration with Spiritczualic Enhancement Center. Together with co-author Paul Woods, a memoir titled I Am Damo Suzuki was also written and released in 2019.
