The majority of cricket fans worldwide are now familiar with Shamar Joseph. The 24-year-old has garnered a lot of attention for his game-winning effort during the historic Test victory over Australia by the West Indies at The Gabba.
Franchise contracts have been easy to come by since that performance, in which Joseph overcame an ailing foot to bowl the Windies to a victory and even the series. While he is still recovering from the injuries he received in Australia, he has been in negotiations to sign with many leagues worldwide.
However, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have recruited Joseph to replace Mark Wood, demonstrating their foresight. The West Indian has only participated in two T20 matches, so he hardly has any experience, but the team may have made a wise choice in signing him.
These three factors make LSG’s decision to recruit Shamar Joseph for the 2024 Indian Premier League wise.
1. Shamar Joseph may be an X-factor because he’s a relatively unknown bowler
Shamar Joseph, a cricket player at the highest level, is as unknown as they come after being selected to play for Guyana out of obscurity. And in a competition like the IPL, where every other bowler will have to contend with well-thought-out strategies created against them based on analytics, that may work to his advantage.
Joseph has bowled eight overs in the format but has only participated in two T20s during his career. It will be difficult for the oppositions to determine exactly what he brings to the table because there isn’t much video of him bowling in the other formats.
Many unknown bowlers have made an impression in the IPL by being unpredictable; examples include Jasprit Bumrah, Mustafizur Rahman, Matheesha Pathirana, and Mayank Markande. Joseph may be added to the LSG roster.
2. Shamar Joseph’s form and confidence will be strong after his Australian heroics
Against Australia, Shamar Joseph made his Test debut in the opening Test. He won the Player of the Series title after taking 13 wickets at an average of 17.3, leaving an early impact.
Naturally, Joseph’s Test results do not ensure success in an entirely new format. He has, nonetheless, proven that he had the fortitude to compete against the world’s finest players and prevail. The young player must be quite confident and in good shape because his Australian post-game interviews revealed a calm and upbeat demeanor.
Right now, Joseph’s stock is strong, and the player must be in a great place. Although it may not be a concrete issue, LSG has taken advantage of a favorable opportunity.
3. Shamar Joseph possesses all the necessary components to flourish as a T20 bowler
Though the evidence in T20 cricket may not be strong enough to support it, Shamar Joseph has all the makings of a great spinner in the competition.
Joseph can often reach speeds of over 140 kph and can even approach 150 kph because to his fluid motion. The 24-year-old can move the ball in all directions and is skiddy, however he can occasionally extract a noticeable bounce off a length.
In addition, Joseph appeared to be able to strike the yorker at will in the two Test matches vs Australia. Not that he needed to use the red ball in many different ways; he already has enough in his toolbox to be successful in the near term.
