Atlanta United wins their first game in nine games after being winless in their previous nine. They defeated Inter Miami FC, the current leaders of the Eastern Conference, 3-1 to claim their 100th victory in club history.

At the press conference following the game, head coach Gonzalo Pineda stated, “For me, it was a major sign of excellent mentality for the club.” But it’s also a gift for the supporters. The fact that our supporters took over the entire corner behind the goal tonight was something I truly enjoyed. They came here in an attempt to inspire the players.”

Atlanta United first attempted to disrupt Miami’s formation, since Miami ranks third in the league in terms of possession. The final third opened with a few opportunities for the 5-Stripes. Brooks Lennon’s attempt from the right side of the box in the tenth minute went just wide left of the goal.

Despite Josh Cohen’s diving save in the 20th minute—his first start for Atlanta in Major League Soccer—the play was out to be offside. During the first half, Atlanta’s set pieces were quite threatening. Following a corner kick in the thirty-first minute, Derrick Williams and Jamal Thiare both had scoring opportunities within the area.

The first half of the game continued as it opened. As he took a shot from the right side of the box, Thiago Almada, who was wearing the captain’s arm band for this game, looked closely. Atlanta managed to maintain control of the game even though their possession percentage was worse. Stian Gregersen, Derrick Williams, and Luis Abram, the three center backs, all contributed to stifling Miami’s opportunities.

In the 44th minute, Saba Lobjanidze scored a rocket of a strike to put Atlanta ahead. Atlanta was able to intensify their onslaught after regaining possession of the ball in the middle. With a pass from Tristan Muymba, Lobanjidze rapidly moved the ball across the field, preventing Miami from setting up defensively. With a shot from the center of the field outside the box, Lobjanidze scored.

During the two minutes of stoppage time in the first half, Lobjanidze came dangerously close to extending the advantage for Atlanta. He broke through the middle, but his attempt was stopped and missed the net. The 5-Stripes have been searching for a goal and the lead throughout this stretch of play, and Atlanta United has both at the end of the first half.

Atlanta United’s impressive performance persisted till the start of the second half. Following yet another Miami mistake, the 5-Stripes were on the verge of a breakthrough. In the 59th minute, Lobjanidze scored his second goal of the game with help from Brook Lennon and Almada. He was patient with the ball and took a shot from outside the box, positioned in the center.

When questioned about his ability to have time with the ball without being stopped by the opposition after the game, Lobjanidze responded, “I was not surprised.” “I spoke with Gonzalo Pineda, and he expressed his desire for me to dribble the ball with greater intensity. It was pleasant to demonstrate that following our chat.”

Even though Atlanta dominated the most of the game, Lionel Messi’s one shot in the 62nd minute was all it needed for Atlanta to respond. Cohen was unable to stop a low curling ball that just required one touch.

The 5-Stripes gave away the goal, but they were able to bounce back fast. The club sought to get better at handling the moments that follow goal conception. After a shot from the center position outside the box, Lobjanidze came dangerously close to scoring a hat trick. Nineteen minutes after Messi’s strike, Atlanta took back the two-goal advantage. The ball went to native Caleb Wiley following a swift play from Almada at the top of the box. Wiley fired a pass across the six-yard box, which Thiaré was able to put into the back of the net.

In the 74th minute, both Atlanta and Miami substituted players after the goal. Derrick Williams went out, while Edwin Mosquera replaced Saba Lobjanidze. Noah Cobb entered the game. For Miami, Leonardo Campana replaced Robert Taylor.

Atlanta United will attempt one more goal. In the last third, Mosquera attempted a shot from the right side, but it missed. Thaire attempted to obtain a brace of his own, but the box itself barred it. In the 83rd minute, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Jay Fortune replaced Jamal Thiare and Dax McCarty, respectively.

In the 89th minute, Ronald Hernandez replaced Thiago Almada as Atlanta’s last substitution of the evening. The 5-Stripes played a little keep-away to allow the time to pass after seven minutes of stoppage time was added. Miami was able to muster a couple opportunities, but Atlanta emerged victorious and in a decisive fashion.

“We are winning together if we are winning,” Lobjanidze declared. “We are all losing if we are losing. I am aware that sometimes all you need is a game like that, and that way our mindset and self-assurance will return.”
