Teams in 5A’s Final Four Capsules
No. 2 In baseball, Regis Jesuit will be aiming to capture their fourth state title and first since 2019. The Raiders defeated No. 7 Fort Collins 3-1, No. 11 Cherokee Trail 3-0, and No. 5 Cherry Creek 3-0 to advance to the state championship game.
In baseball, No. 5 Cherry Creek would be chasing their seventh state championship and first since 2012. The Bruins own the most state titles of any 5A team and are tied for third most in state history. Cherry Creek defeated No. 13 Chaparral 8-0 and No. 16 Grandview 4-1 in the state tournament’s opening round before losing 3-0 to No. 2 Regis Jesuit. In order to win the state championship, the Bruins must overcome Regis Jesuit twice en route to the championship game via the consolation round.
Not 8 Prairie View is trying to win a state championship in any sport for the first time ever. The Thunderhawks, who lost to No. 16 Grandview in the state tournament opener, now have to go through the consolation round to reach the championship game. After defeating No. 13 Chaparral (5-2) and No. 11 Cherokee Trail (5-2) in the first and second round consolation games, respectively, Prairie View maintained its prospects of making it to the tournament. The rematch of Grandview’s initial tournament game is next.
Currently ranked 16th, Grandview is vying for both its first-ever baseball state championship and its second state championship this year after taking home the Super Smash Bros. esports championship. To win the state championship, Grandview must overcome Regis Jesuit twice in route to the championship game via the consolation round. Grandview defeated No. 8 Prairie 13-5 in the first game of the state final before losing 4-1 to No. 5 Cherry Creek. No. 7 Fort Collins was defeated 6-3 by Grandview in the consolation game of the second round. A second meeting with No. 8 Prairie View is scheduled for later.
4A Championship Four Groups
Holy Family, ranked fifth, will go straight to the championship game on Saturday, where it will try to win its fourth baseball title overall and its first in 4A. Before moving up to 4A, the Tigers defeated Eaton in 2010, 2013, and 2014 to win three crowns in a five-year span. Holy Family upset No. 4 Palisade 7-3, No. 6 Falcon 11-6, and top-seeded Windsor 9-4 to go unbeaten in the state tournament.
In baseball, No. 6 Falcon is trying to win its first state championship ever. It would be the school’s first state championship overall since 2008. The Falcons defeated No. 3 Pueblo County 5-4 in the opening round and No. 2 Golden 7-2 in the second, therefore defeating two of the top three seeds in the competition. The Falcons’ 11-6 loss to Holy Family, ranked No. 5, means they will have to go through the consolation bracket and, should they make it to the final game, defeat Holy Family twice to win the championship.
No. 2 Golden hopes to advance from the consolation round to the Championship Game. In baseball, the Demons will be vying for their second state championship overall and their first since 2003. Golden defeated Lewis-Palmer, ranked seventh, 4-0, to win its opening round of the state tournament on Friday. It subsequently suffered a 7-2 loss against No. 6 Falcon before defeating No. 4 Palisade, 15-5, to avoid elimination in the second round consolation game. Next up for Golden is a third-round consolation game against No. 3 Pueblo County on Friday.
No. 3 Pueblo County will try to maintain its current winning way while attempting to win a baseball state championship for the first time. After losing to No. 6 Falcon 5-4 in their state tournament opener, the Hornets are hoping to go on in the consolation bracket. Since then, they have recovered in the consolation bracket, defeating No. 7 Lewis-Palmer 10-0 before upsetting Windsor, the top-seeded team, 17-15 to get to the third round of consolation, where they will face No. 2 Golden.
Teams for the 3A Final Four
With a win, No. 1 Eaton will extend its winning run to four straight state titles. The Reds, who have won each of the previous three state crowns, are the school with the most titles in state history (15). The Reds defeated No. 8 Forge Christian 6-5 in the opening round of this year’s state tournament. They then triumphed over No. 5 Coal Ridge 14-4 and No. 3 University 2-0.
No. 3 University is hoping to win its first state championship since winning back-to-back crowns in 2018 and 2019 and get revenge on Eaton, which has defeated them in the final game the past two years. In baseball, University has won five state championships overall; the first was in 1982. This season, the Bulldogs defeated No. 2 Berthoud, 6-4, and No. 6 Colorado Academy, 5-2, before losing to No. 1 Eaton, 2-0, in the quarterfinals. University will attempt to advance to the final game by winning two games against Eaton in the consolation round.
In baseball, No. 4 Resurrection Christian is vying for its third state title and first since 2014. The Cougars will need to overcome No. 5 Coal Ridge twice in the consolation round in order to make it to the title game. After defeating Resurrection Christian 11-0 in the opening round, Coal Ridge went on to defeat No. 8 Forge Christian 7-6 and No. 2 Berthoud 12-7.
In baseball, No. 5 Coal Ridge is vying for its first-ever state championship. After defeating No. 4 Resurrection Christian 11-0 to start the state tournament, the Titans lost 14-4 to top-seeded Eaton, the three-time reigning champion. Coal Ridge defeated No. 10 The Classical Academy 7–6 in the second round consolation game. In its rematch with No. 4 Resurrection Christian, Coal Ridge will try to move on in the consolation bracket.
Teams for the 2A Final Four
In baseball, No. 2 Denver Christian is attempting to retain its crown from the previous year and earn its fourth state championship; the Thunder have already won state in 1996 and 2013. Denver Christian has dominated the competition thus far, defeating No. 7 Monte Vista 4-1, No. 11 Dayspring Christian 11-2, and No. 12 Lyons 6-2 to secure a spot in the Championship Game on Saturday.
In baseball, No. 12 Lyons is vying for its first state championship; it is the school’s first state championship in any sport since 2019. After defeating No. 13 Swink 12-2 in the opening round, the Lions defeated top-seeded Limon 5-1. However, the Lions’ semifinal loss to Denver Christian, ranked second, was 6-2. As a result, they will have to go through the consolation bracket to play in the championship game.
Playing through the consolation round, No. 1 Limon is aiming for its third consecutive crown and its fifth overall after winning state titles in 2021 and 2022. The Badgers defeated No. 8 Buena Vista, who they will play again in the state championship, 17-7 in the opening round of the tournament. However, they were defeated 5-1 by No. 12 Lyons. A 2-1 victory over No. 3 Las Animas secured Limon the consolation round second round match.
In baseball, No. 8 Buena Vista is vying for both its first state championship and the school’s first since 2020. The top-seeded Demons were defeated 17-7 by Limon in the state tournament’s opening match, but they bounced back to defeat No. 13 Swink 6-5 and No. 11 Dayspring Christian 7-4 in the first two consolation rounds. The winner of the rematch between Buena Vista and No. 1 Limon advances to the fourth-round consolation game.
