Jonesboro, Ohio On Monday, January 15, at 10:30 a.m., there will be a ceremony honouring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the Arkansas State University campus. “A Dream: What the World Needs Now” is the event’s theme.
This reflects Dr. King’s vision of justice and peace for all people worldwide. According to Dr. Lonnie Williams, vice chancellor of the Division of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement, “We need more people with his type of dream and working to achieve it, not afraid to advocate for it, given the turmoil in the world today.”
The Jonesboro High School auditorium will host a youth program on Sunday, January 14, at 4 p.m., in advance of the celebration on Monday. Young people can gather together through the program to share their abilities.

Williams noted that the Northeast Arkansas Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Planning Committee, of which he is a member, organises this event annually. Kenisha Ross leads the committee as its chairman.
“Anyone who wishes to take part in or assist in organising this yearly event is welcome to join our community-based organisation. This committee has organised 22 similar celebrations, and this one will be the 22nd, according to Williams.
The yearly march/parade will be staged at A-State’s Lt. Col. Frederick Turner Jr. Military Science Building starting at 9:30 a.m.
Marion Berry Parkway will lead the procession north to Johnson Ave., from whence it will turn east to University Loop East and finally south to Fowler Centre, which is situated at 201 Olympic Drive.
“You’ll see kids marching with parents, local Jonesboro leaders, A-State leaders, and students, faculty, and staff who want to show their support,” Williams continued. “There will be at least 300 participants in the parade/march, including a high school marching band, school-age drill teams, and others.”
At noon at Fowler Centre, a guest speaker will round up the morning’s activities. Jannie M. Cotton, a licenced professional counsellor and the first Black woman in the state to hold the position of chief executive officer of a major mental health organisation, will be the speaker. After working for 13 years, she just retired from her employment at Professional Counselling Associates in North Little Rock.
Williams stated Like many other universities throughout the nation, A-State suspends school so that students may enjoy their holiday.
He went on, “We host celebrations to honour Dr. King and what he did to bring about social justice and peace to make it meaningful and not just a day off from classes or work.”
He asserted that the task must be carried out.
People will need to be reminded of the “drum major for justice” until social justice, equality for everyone, and national peace are realised. This is what Dr. King espoused and wished to see come to pass. He said, “Dr. King reminded America of the areas in which it was falling short of the promise established for all Americans.
The public is welcome to attend this free program.
