Nissan has issued a warning to owners of older automobiles to stop driving their vehicles if they have Takata airbags that have been recalled and not fixed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Wednesday.

83,920 vehicles are covered by the Japanese automaker’s “Do Not Drive” signal, according to the NHTSA. The automobiles under question include 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4, 2002-2006 Nissan Sentra, and 2002-2004 Nissan Pathfinder. These vehicles may feature Takata airbags, which were recalled in 2020.

After the warning, Nissan’s shares ended the Wednesday session down almost 3%.

The NHTSA issued a statement saying, “NHTSA is advising all vehicle owners to check to determine whether their vehicle has an open Takata airbag recall.” “If you own one of these cars, don’t drive it until the damaged airbag is replaced and the repair is finished.”

Affected owners may get free mobile repair and towing from Nissan and Infiniti, as well as loaner automobiles in some regions. Nissan has a subsidiary called Infiniti.

A Nissan representative told CNBC in a statement, “There is an increased chance the inflator might burst during an airbag deployment, spewing sharp metal shards which can cause serious injury or death due to the age of the cars equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators.”

The NHTSA reports that it has been verified that a defective Takata airbag that burst killed 27 individuals in the United States. The NHTSA claims that injuries have been experienced by at least 400 additional people.

It’s one of the biggest car safety returns in history, with at least 67 million Takata airbag inflators recalled in the United States and over 100 million globally.

After agreeing to pay $1 billion in criminal fines related to its alleged fraudulent activity in the sales of its faulty airbag inflators, Takata filed for bankruptcy protection in both Japan and the United States in 2017.
