Rapper Sean Kingston to Florida, he and his mother face $1 million in fraud charges

California’s San Bernardino — Rapper and musician Sean Kingston consented to be turned over to Florida police on Tuesday, waiving his right to challenge extradition in a California court. He and his mother are accused of perpetrating fraud worth over a million dollars.

According to sources from the San Bernardino sheriff’s office and courts, Kingston, 34, did not appear in public but did sign documents consenting to forego extradition hearings, The Associated Press was informed.

He was still being held in a jail in Southern California on Tuesday afternoon, but according to an email from the sheriff’s office, Mara Rodriguez, the spokesperson, she will work with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office to get him back to Florida.

Kingston was detained on Thursday while doing a performance at Fort Irwin, an Army training facility in the Mojave Desert of California.

The same day, a SWAT squad stormed Kingston’s leased house in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, leading to the arrest of his mother, 61-year-old Janice Turner.

Arrest warrants released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office charge Kingston and Turner with executing an organised plot to defraud, grand theft, identity theft, and associated offences. According to the warrants, they allegedly took furniture, a Cadillac Escalade, jewellery, and cash.

The American-Jamaican artist worked with Justin Bieber on the song “Eenie Meenie” and had a No. 1 success in 2007 with “Beautiful Girls.”

Kingston and his mother’s lawyer, Robert Rosenblatt, had announced on Friday that they would forego extradition, expressing confidence in a favourable conclusion and looking forward to facing the accusations in a Florida court.

Rosenblatt did not immediately respond to emails sent on Tuesday asking for more commentary.

According to the search warrants in the case, they took about $500,000 in jewellery between October and March, along with more than $200,000 from Bank of America, $160,000 from an Escalade dealer, more than $100,000 from First Republic Bank, and $86,000 from a company that makes bespoke beds. No details were provided.

Kisean Anderson, also known as Kingston, was already serving a two-year probationary sentence for trafficking in stolen goods.

In 2006, his mother admitted to bank fraud after taking more than $160,000, and federal court documents show that she spent close to 1.5 years in jail.
