The S24 Ultra model from Samsung. The gadget bears a striking resemblance to Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra. This time, however, the primary distinction is within: Samsung is making significant strides in artificial intelligence.

Key Facts

  • On Wednesday, Samsung unveiled its new premium Galaxy S24 smartphone lineup, highlighting AI capabilities for picture editing and web search.
  • Starting at $1,250, the Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 retail for $1,250, $1,000, and $800, respectively.
  • Samsung is hoping that its AI-powered features will liven up the smartphone industry, which has been dull and uninteresting lately.

Samsung unveiled its new flagship Galaxy S24 smartphone lineup on Wednesday, showcasing cutting-edge AI capabilities as the corporation aims to start 2024 strong.

There are three variants of the S24 series available: the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra, as is currently the norm with Samsung’s flagship line. Starting at $1,300 for the S24 Ultra, $1,000 for the S24+, and $800 for the S24, are the prices of these devices.

Before the announcement, the South Korean electronics behemoth unveiled the new devices at its Kings Cross offices in London earlier this week. During a press event, Samsung showcased the phone’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, demonstrating its ability to alter photos and do object searches.

Samsung is utilizing an enhanced version of Qualcomm most recent Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 for use with its flagship S24 Ultra, the company’s largest of the three smartphones with punchier specifications and features. For its S24 and S24+ models, the business uses a combination of internal Exynos chipset and Qualcomm systems-on-chips (SoCs).

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, told CNBC that “the Galaxy S24 series devices, along with Google’s Pixel range, mark the dawn of the consumerization of AI in smartphones.” “All smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, will follow suit as they incorporate an increasing number of AI-powered features into their new models.”

With this release, Samsung is placing its bet on AI-powered features to pique users’ interest in smartphones at a time when sales have slowed due to small hardware improvements. With its Pixel devices, Google has led the way, and it seems certain that this will continue to be a trend in consumer electronics moving forward—not just for smartphones but for all of them.

The game is Artificial Intelligence

For most tech fans, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is the big deal, and in terms of appearance, it doesn’t really vary much from the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

This is due to Samsung’s lack of significant hardware changes. Even though the phone is flatter this time around, it still has the same 6.8-inch diagonal display as its predecessor. There was greater curvature on the S23 Ultra.

This model’s titanium casing makes it much more robust than the S23 Ultra, which is a major improvement to the exterior hardware.

This time, however, the primary distinction is within: Samsung is making significant strides in artificial intelligence. Like other smartphone manufacturers, Samsung is now putting a lot of emphasis on “on-demand” AI, or the capacity to execute AI tasks directly on a device as opposed to via the cloud.

According to the firm, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra boasts the brightest display on a Samsung phone to date, with a maximum brightness of 2,600 nits.

Samsung

Many of the new AI functions that Samsung claims the Galaxy S24 Ultra will have are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor for mobile, which is designed specifically for AI devices.

It indicates a trend that many smartphone manufacturers have been following lately. New smartphone updates no longer thrill consumers as much as they once did. Thus, phone manufacturers have to think of creative ways to re-capture consumers’ interest and ignite the market.

One feature that Samsung has included in the Galaxy S24 series is the capability for users to circle objects or places that they are pointing their camera at, or on an image they have shot, and then search for information on what those objects are.

You may draw a circle around an object, like a landmark or a pair of shoes, and the AI will then suggest relevant searches on Google.

The capability of using AI to edit images is another feature that Samsung promoted. In this way, users may remove reflections from photos they’ve taken—for example, if you took a photo of yourself facing a window.

Alternatively, you may drag someone from left to right to shift them from one side of the room to the other.

Samsung also demonstrated live transcription capabilities on its most recent mobile devices.

For example, when making a call to someone speaking French, the user can get a real-time transcription that is being given through to them. Like with transcription solutions like Otter AI, you can also record a conversation between two individuals and have it transcribed while the AI labels each person that speaks.

According to Paolo Pescatore of PP Foresight, Samsung “must focus its efforts on retaining its core loyal premium base,” as he stated to CNBC.

Pescatoer stated, “It is arguable that Samsung has accomplished more than enough with the new features powered by its own AI platform.” “This might mark the beginning of a new era for smartphones and a significant super cycle for Samsung.”

“In light of this, Samsung will need to lure customers in with a variety of rival offers to accommodate all tastes; this includes more senior Samsung owners who will unavoidably be seeking an upgrade.”

Artificial Intelligence watermarking

Samsung also has to consider the implications of its AI features for issues like copyright infringement and privacy.

Innumerable instances of people employing AI to produce photos and other creative material and pass it off as their own have been documented over the past year, even if in some cases the work is directly inspired by or even looks exactly like that of artists.

As a result, when a user of a Galaxy S24 manipulates a photo using AI, Samsung records the modifications made using AI and stores them in the metadata. Additionally, it will include a watermark-like symbol in the lower left corner to indicate that the image has been altered with artificial intelligence.

Using Samsung’s in-app cropping tool, a few analysts and reporters were able to remove this symbol at the Samsung briefing in King’s Cross, but the icon remains in the metadata.

“AI-powered image and video manipulation raises some ethical concerns, especially in light of deep fake content that has recently gained media attention,” Wood stated to CNBC. “Samsung took a positive step with the addition of a watermark and updated metadata for altered content, and I’m sure others will follow.”

He went on, “Samsung’s ability to increase consumer awareness and engagement via its marketing for the Galaxy S24 portfolio will largely depend on Samsung’s success with its AI-based features.” “Clearly communicating the advantages and continuously expanding the use cases are necessary for success.”
