In New York City Steve Lawrence, an actor and singer who won awards, passed away on Thursday at the age of 88 from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in Brooklyn, Lawrence had many years of success as part of the legendary vocal combo Steve & Eydie.

He became regulars on Steve Allen’s Tonight Show, when he met singer Eydie Gorme, who would become his future wife. In 1957, they tied the knot in Las Vegas, officially launching their singing career.

Throughout the 1960s, the pair entertained audiences across the nation and on the biggest variety shows of the day, such as The Hollywood Palace and The Ed Sullivan Show.

For his Broadway role in “What Makes Sammy Run?” Lawrence received a Tony Award nomination, and together with him, he played in “Golden Rainbow,” which was the Broadway season’s high point in 1968–69.

Three television specials including tributes to the Gershwins, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin were produced and starred in by Lawrence and his wife, who went on to win many Emmy Awards.

The pair did a run of sold-out shows at Carnegie Hall in the 1980s, and in the 1990s they went on a countrywide tour with Frank Sinatra.

Lawrence is survived by his son David, daughter-in-law Faye, granddaughter Mabel, brother Bernie, as well as a large number of loyal nieces, nephews, friends, and longtime admirers. He is remembered as a loving spouse, proud father, affectionate grandpa, and incredibly accomplished performing artist.

His son Michael passed away in 1986, as did his wife Eydie, who passed away in 2013.
