Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), a hub for United Airlines, will see the addition of U.S. carrier Avelo Airlines to its network this summer, making it the 43rd airline to service the airport.
Avelo will begin service between IAD and southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) on July 12. The airline will be the only one operating the service, which will be flown twice a week using a Boeing 737NG.
At the moment, Avelo flights are available from HVN to Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), which is around 60 miles away from IAD.
HVN is located around 80 miles north-east of New York’s LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports and 60 miles south of Hartford, Connecticut’s Bradley International Airport (BDL). Nov. 20, 2021 saw Avelo launch HVN service, with six routes leading to locations in Florida. This month, Avelo’s growth at the airport is extended with the addition of four new routes, the most notable of which is the 4X-weekly flight schedule to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), which began operation on May 2.

With the launch of these four additional routes this month, Avelo’s total number of airports it serves from HVN, its original U.S. East Coast base, now stands at 21. Avelo is set to link HVN to two major international hubs on the East Coast with the inclusion of ATL, the world’s busiest passenger airport and the base hub for Delta Air Lines, and IAD.
Although the majority of Avelo’s flights from HVN are to small and mid-sized markets, it also connects Tweed-New Haven to Chicago Midway and Orlando International Airport in Florida.
According to a statement from Avelo CEO Andrew Levy, “this exclusive nonstop service [between HVN and IAD] enables exploring the multitude of attractions our nation’s capital has to offer a short and smooth journey for Connecticut tourists.”
“Avelo’s continuous growth in Connecticut is helping to boost connectivity for enterprises that are currently here and will drive additional regional development,” said Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut.
